Ann O’Brien, Former Mayor

Ann O'Brien was appointed by the City of Burlingame to the Board of Directors of the Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency in February 2021.  The city’s water system serves the entire area within its city limits, plus portions of unincorporated Burlingame Hills and a few properties in San Mateo and Hillsborough.

 

Ms. O'Brien was first elected in November 2005 and is now serving as Mayor for the fourth time.  She currently serves on the Advanced Life Services JPA, Emergency Services Council, Specific Plan for Rollins Road, City/Schools Liaison Committee, and Parks Master Plan Committee

 

Ms. O'Brien has been a resident of Burlingame for over 40 years.  She worked as a registered nurse at Sequoia Hospital for nine years, and was a clinical instructor at the College of San Mateo and the University of San Francisco.  Currently, she works as a legislative aid for San Mateo County Supervisor David J. Canepa, representing North San Mateo County.

 

Ms. O'Brien served on the Community Center Master Plan Advisory Committee and played an active role in developing and implementing the Downtown Plan.  In 2006, she created the Downtown Business District Cleanup Committee which implements various beautification projects throughout the year.  She helped establish the Economic Subcommittee in 2007, in which she played an active role for six years, and served again from 2019-2020.   Additionally, she was instrumental in the 2010 Safeway project and served on the subcommittee that planned the 2014 Burlingame Avenue Streetscape.

 

Ms. O'Brien is committed to maintaining Burlingame’s vitality for its current and future residents and businesses.  She participated in the first-ever Countywide Blue Ribbon Task Force on Adult Health Care Coverage Expansion, an organization that ensures health care access to those with the most need in the community.  Ms. O'Brien's work with the Broadway merchants and the City Chamber of Commerce established concierge tours, an educational program that promotes local businesses in Burlingame.

 

She was on the Planning Commission for 7 1/2 years and served as Chair in 2002.  Her involvement on the Neighborhood Consistency Subcommittee was instrumental in implementing design review and evaluating ongoing development of an effective architectural review process for the City of Burlingame.

 

Ms. O'Brien is the mother of two daughters.  She served on Our Lady of Angel’s (OLA) Mothers Club Board from 2003-2005 as the board's Financial Secretary.  She served as a volunteer for approximately sixteen years in OLA's classrooms, library and health room, coached basketball, and assisted in various fundraising events such as the Fun Faire and Dinner Auction.
